Coronavirus is spread through droplets and virus particles released into the air when an infected person breathes, talks, laughs, sings, coughs, or sneezes. Larger droplets may fall to the ground in a few seconds, but these tiny infectious particles can linger in the air and accumulate in in order places, especially where many people are gathered and there is poor ventilation. Mask wearing, hand hygiene and physically distancing are essential to preventing COVID-19.

Infectolab Americas offer PCR tests for COVID-19 which detects genetic material from SARS-COV-2. We also offer T-cell testing/Spot testing. Cell mediated immunity is based on T-cell activation. Activation of T-cells results in the release of IFN γ playing a key role in immunity against viral and bacterial infections. The EliSpot technique allows standardized measuring of the INF γ and IL-2 release after antigen specific stimulation.  The T-cell test can also be used to monitor the vaccine efficacy.

The antibody tests are checking the humoral response to pathogens. It can be used to show if you were previously exposed to or infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. For SARS-Co-V-2 antibody testing can also be used to see efficacy of vaccination.

SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that can cause an acute respiratory syndrome. SARS-CoV-2 is also known as COVID-19 (coronavirus 19).  Coronaviruses constitute a large family of viruses which can infect people and animals, for example birds and mammals. Coronavirus infection can lead to a simple cold, but also to severe or even fatal disease.  The two highly pathogenic viruses SAR-CoV and MER-CoV cause severe respiratory syndromes in humans.  Infections with the other four human pathogenic coronaviruses (HCOV-NL63, HCOV-229E, HCOV-OC43 and HKU1) mainly only results in mild diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Symptoms usually show up in people within 2-14 days of exposure to the virus. A person infected with the coronavirus is contagious to others for up to 2 days before symptoms appear, and they remain contagious to others for 10-20 days depending upon their immune strength and severity of the illness.

The symptoms include:

  1. Cough

  2. Fever or chills

  3. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  4. Muscle or body aches

  5. Sore throat

  6. New loss of taste or smell

  7. Diarrhea

  8. Headache

  9. General fatigue

  10. Nausea or vomiting

  11. Congestion or runny nose

Treatment of COVID-19 involves addressing the symptoms of the infection and support people with more severe disease. For mild cases over the medication fever reducers helps. More severe cases may require hospitalization and patient may receive combination of treatments including steroids, oxygen, mechanical breathing support and other COVID-19 treatments. Contact your Doctor right away if you experience severe symptom.
